Organic Irish Soda Bread

Jump to Recipe

Organic Irish Soda Bread is a rustic, hearty yeast-free bread that’s easy to make and heavenly drenched with sweet cream butter and a drizzle of honey. I always have to have a warm slice straight from the oven! 🤗 Not only is it the perfect vehicle for sopping up dreamy brown gravies and rich broths in soups and stews, it’s incredible toasted with butter, cinnamon, and sugar!

I love all things Irish! The discovery of my husband and sons’ direct descent from the ancient kings and queens of Ireland was pretty awesome! I had known for years they were part Irish from his mother’s side, but the royal blood comes from his father’s side. We’ll get into their Scots heritage another day, however, it’s pretty awesome, too. 😁

Irish Soda Bread | Culinary Craftiness

I found many recipes for Irish soda bread, but none were focused on the organic, wholesome ingredients our bodies need. We have to get away from all the manmade chemicals we now know are causing all sorts of disabling disorders. Therefore, my quest to remove all toxic cooking implements and ingredients in our kitchen began earnestly at the beginning of 2024. I tossed everything from Teflon coated pans to the Keurig coffee maker. Also, we stopped cooking in plastic in the microwave and never put hot foods in plastic. It’s super tough to eat all organic, and impossible if you want to enjoy food from restaurants whether you eat in or take out.

Read Labels

Check back often for my lists of what to get rid of and why, and what to eliminate from your pantry and fridge. In addition, I will be sharing best products and ingredients based on others’ reviews and my own. Most importantly, read all labels! If it’s banned in the EU and other countries, it should be banned here. Also, don’t ignore Proposition 65 warnings. They are valid.

Eating this Organic Irish Soda Bread not only feels healthier, it’s more in line with what our ancestors ate.

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 425°F. Grease and flour a cake pan or baking sheet.
  • Combine dry ingredients. Add milk to make a sticky dough. Place on floured surface to lightly knead and shape into slightly flattened round. Don't over-knead or all the gases from the soda/buttermilk reaction will escape.
  • Place in pan and cut an X in the top. Cover with another pan and bake 30 minutes.
  • Remove cover and bake another 10-15. Bottom should sound hollow when tapped.
  • Cover with a moist towel. Store leftovers in a tightly sealed container or zipper bag.

Notes

*To make buttermilk: Add 1 tbsp. white vinegar to 1 cup of 2% or whole milk. Let sit for 5 minutes or more.

I don’t recommend eating a chunk this way – it was rather messy – but incredibly tasty! 😋
