Authentic Coney Dog Sauce

Melissa | Culinary Craftiness
Authentic ingredients as in the original recipes brought to Indiana & Michigan by the Macedonians in the early 20th century. This copycat coney sauce is based on the taste of the old Bear's Den drive-in coney dogs in Shelbyville, Indiana.

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs Marketside organic, grass-fed ground beef
  • 1 large Marketside organic onion, finely diced or grated
  • 1 9 oz Great Value organic tomato paste (1-1/2 cans)
  • 1 9 oz spring or filtered water
  • 5 tbsp Frontier Co-op Organic Chili Powder
  • 1 tbsp Watkins Gourmet Organic Ground Cumin
  • 1/2-1 tsp The Spice Way Allspice, to taste
  • 1 tbsp Great Value organic minced garlic
  • 2 tbsp Great Value organic, prepared yellow mustard
  • 1 tbsp Whitehouse organic cider vinegar
  • 2 pkgs Simply Nature organic uncured beef hotdogs or Butterball turkey franks, ground in food processor

Instructions

  • Put everything except for hotdogs in a large skillet. Do NOT brown and drain ground beef first. Cook over medium-high heat, stirring to break up meat into fine crumbles. Lower heat to a simmer and cook for about 30 minutes, or until thickened, stirring occasionally.
  • Add ground up hotdogs and cook for another 15 minutes. This sauce shouldn't be runny.
  • Serve on your favorite hotdogs and buns with optional toppings like diced onions or shredded cheddar.
